Jake La Fond is a mechanic who is just one of the locals, until his small and rather quaint hometown, Otis, is rocked by strange events. After going hunting with a friend ends up as a zombie Jake realizes something is really wrong ! The town, of course, ignores his pleas and thinks he is a bit weird until the carnage begins. It seems rather disgusting squishy parasites are taking over the citizens of his town and turning them into zombies. By the time they realize what has happened the vast majority of the town is infected and Jake, his girlfriend Alex and Randy, his gun toting rival, must shot their way out.

At first glance, this does sound fairly derivative; however, director Damon Lemay brings together a range of different horror motifs to make an interesting and action packed zombie film. The combination of the rather disgusting looking slugs, which remind me somewhat of Slither or even Cronenberg’s Shivers combined with the gore of a classic zombie film makes this an enjoyable horror romp.

The acting is surprisingly good, the special effects are impressively well done with a high gore quotient and some quite over the top scenes and there is a good sense of humour which makes it a real winner. The film is kept at a very fast pace so your interest is always sustained - there is always a new “shot to take” or “zombie to kill”, and there are also of course the zombie grandmothers and flesh eating animals to avoid !

While this is a B grade zombie film, it has some really A grade special effects and with careful editing and a great sense of humour it transcends it’s clearly lower end of the scale budget. The mixture of action, horror, gore and humour make this a winner.

I thoroughly enjoyed this bloody romp and highly recommend it.
