Serial Killers have always had a hold on our culture, while the name may
be recent, even the oldest recorded literature tells tales of those who kill,
torture and maim for what seem to be unknowable motives. Our obsession with
such figures seems to originate from a dark and deep recess in our collective
unconscious. Regardless of the whining of puritans, films, crime novels and
products exploring this taboo subject are always successful. Indeed while some
will decry this supposed “culture of death”, figures such as Hannibal Lecter
and Freddy Krueger are cult heroes and crime books and films such as Silence of
the Lambs,
Real world Serial Killers cause both fascination and horror, true crime
books are produced by nearly all major publishers and as the years have
progressed have become more and more popular, especially with the growing trend
in TV shows focused on “Most Wanted” criminals. Perhaps it is our own
individual suppressed rage and fury which feeds our fascination with the
forbidden act and individuals who transgress what is considered taboo. Indeed
Freud would argue that such fascination comes from our own suppressed urges
which exist in the “Pandora’s” box of the sub-conscious mind, while this
suppression, according to Freud at least, brings about what we know as culture,
it also regularly explodes under pressure creating the phenomenon of “Serial
Killers”.
The various products from Serial Killer Merchandise explore this
territory in an impressive way, their products are dark and confronting, yet
artistically of the highest quality. They may be the stuff of nightmares, but
they have that something which makes us want to look at them, there is a
strange, even perverse beauty in these images.
The 2008 Calendar is really quite stunning; it features eight different
dark artists depicting the wide spectrum of infamous killers from Charles
Manson to John Wayne Gacy Jnr, Aileen Wuoronos to Ted Bundy. The calendar is
twice the size of the 2007 calendar and includes multiple artist depictions of
each killer, background information and biography of each and even Serial
Killer Trivia for each month !
Artists include Jack Malebranche, Nico Claux, Johnny Machine, Chuck
Hodi, Gerard Tobit and Matt Verges. The quality of the calendar cannot be
faulted, each month is beautifully presented, the images are striking and are
skillfully reproduced, this is not a
cheaply made production. To my mind this is a real collectable item with many
works of art which will outlast its use as a calendar.

In regards to Collectables, Serial Killer Merchandise also produces a
series of Serial Killer Trading Cards. Altogether there are seventy five high
quality trading cards featuring the artwork of Nico Claux, Jack Malebranche,
Chuck Hodi, Johnny Machine, Mark Stinson, Gerard Torbitt, Mike Henderson, and
others! These cards are of the highest (and darkest !) quality and are really
quite unique. No other company has produced such truly devilish collectables
and so these really are quite a treat. A couple of images are shown on the left
from this series (Jeffrey Dahmer and Charles Manson).
They also have a range of other items available so it is worth visiting
their site and savoring the shadowy realm therein, there are lots of artist’s
galleries, sample images and background information and well as images and
prices of the various items available. There are even some of the 2007
calendars still available, which might be out of date, but since art and
killing doesn’t go out of style, they are still haunting to look at and well
worth the price.
