Another series in the non-traditional urban fantasy
style that is becoming so popular. In this style we see the characters
being depicted as more human with human problems, and it gives a new look to
old characters.
In
the cities people can petition the “archangels” who run them to become vampires
with all the benefits that entails – immortality,
power, beauty. In return you are expected to offer yourself for a hundred years service. There are those who break the contract. The
Guild Hunters are mortals who track these contract breakers down and return
them for punishment. The punishments are no light thing – if you are immortal,
you can have every bone in your body broken over a very long time.
Archangels
are not the godly creatures of legend – they are a powerful, immortal and
utterly amoral group. After all, these are the ones who create vampires as
servants.
Angel’s Blood
Elena
Deveraux is a Guild hunter. She has acutely developed
senses including a sense of smell that allows her to track vampires and it also
makes for some interesting descriptions of the vampires and angels she comes
into contact with.
“ he smelt like sex and pain”
She
is hired by an archangel Raphael to track down a rogue archangel who has gone
on a savage killing rampage. She will
need all her skills as a hunter and a woman to fulfil the contract. There is as
much danger from the possessive Raphael, who oozes sex appeal, as from the
rogue. Elena herself is pretty strong with the sex appeal.
Archangel’s Kiss
Raphael,
the Archangel of modern-day New York, is now Elena’s lover. He has fed her
ambrosia and turned her into an angel, but she needs time to adapt to her new
powers. The other Archangels may not allow her that much time. There is a plot
to kill her because of what she is. There is constant intrigue between the
archangels, always
looking for a weakness in each other. Elena may be Raphael’s weakness. To Elena
it may be Raphael’s arrogant assumption that love means total possession. She
has enough to deal with just there, but there is a series of crimes that shake
the Angles to the core.
These
books are a great read when you get past all the lavish erotic descriptions of
the male characters. These books would be great to give to your girlfriend or
wife (or both) if you want to get a bit of action.
