First Life
David Attenborough
Roadshow
R4 DVD
Over
his long career Sir David Attenborough has explored the living world in all its
forms, animal, plant and bird life. He has created
some of the most memorable documentary series ever made and created a reputation
for the highest calibre documentary. After working his way through modern life
he realized he had never explored his dream subject, the origins of life. As he
mentions during the program when he was a young man there was little knowledge
of the earliest stages of evolution but now with the great advances in
scientific knowledge he could make the final program in his Life series. Of
course the very latest in CGI and computer special effects have helped as well.
Attenborough's
journey begins in a forest near his childhood home in Leicester, where a fossil
discovery transformed our understanding of the evolution of complex life. This
fossil was the oldest ever found and was a plant like creature which was
actually an animal. It fed on nutrients from the water and lived at great
depth. Attenborough then travels to Newfoundland and onwards through the
Australian outback exploring the earliest forms of life, recreating them with
astounding special effects
Through
two hour long episodes Attenborough explores the origins of life including some
of the most unusual creatures you will ever see. Many of these were
evolutionary dead ends but illustrate the various stages of the natural
selection process. This is a fascinating program with so many memorable sections
including some truly amazing research on trilobites.
There
is also an extra documentary. Attenborough’s Journey which is
a combination of a making of and a celebration of David Attenborough’s life. Filmed over the course of a year, this special
edition documentary is a remarkable portrait of the world’s leading natural
history broadcaster as he makes the landmark series that completes his journey
into the story of life
