Cross-dressing werewolves, drug-using werewolves, fashionista demonesses, Goths, werewolves with eating disorders – all these and more. Infidelity, rock n roll, drugs – it’s not easy being a modern werewolf.

Kalix is the lonely werewolf girl of the title. She has been banished from her clan the MacRinnalch for attacking the Thane, the lord of the werewolf clan, who also happens to be her father. She has been on the run since then living on the streets, trying to starve herself to death (she is bulimic in her human form) while the clan hunts her down. She will, however gorge herself while in werewolf form then throw it all up when she returns to human. As the story progresses we meet more of her family.

There is Thris, a fashion designer sorceress werewolf, and her sister Malveria “the fire queen, whose extreme beauty existed somewhere between a Babylonian Death Goddess and an Asian supermodel” and is a fashion tragic.

Kalix has two brothers – one is the traditional werewolf warrior who really wants to kill Kalix for the reward, and the other is Marcus who has a penchant for women’s clothing. Then there are the two cousins Delicious and Beauty, who have been kicked out of the clan for their rock n roll lifestyle of booze and drugs.

With the death of the Thane Kalix becomes aware of her powers – she was born on the full moon while her mother was in werewolf form and has tremendous powers. All she wants, though, is to be left alone but circumstances seem to keep dragging her back into the politics of the werewolf clan.

It’s an understatement to say that the plot is complex. It is a massive book and you want to follow each character, as there is so much going on. The characters are well drawn with a lot of depth and they carry the plot so it grabs hold of you. Even the evil characters grow on you because of their quirks and oddities. With Kalix the author has pinned down the typical teenage girl perfectly. It’s a three course meal of a book and will leave you satisfied.
