Taschen

Tower Books Australia 2008

This is an astounding guide to some of the most significant films of the century. Sure, we may all make different choices, but Taschen have some well qualified reviewers on hand and the choices they have made seem to be pretty close to what many would believe to definitive. Prof. Dr. Jürgen Müller, for example, edits the Taschen Movie decade series and certainly seems to have his finger on the pulse of art and film. The films presented in this beautifully presented two volume set cover the gambit from horror to comedy, fantasy to tragedy, epic to musical, all genres are represented in this compendium.

Each film is offered extensive coverage and presented in an easy to use chronological format. Entries include a synopsis, cast and crew listings, technical information, actor and director biographies, trivia and awards. Of course, the visual side is not ignored; the book is illustrated throughout with stills, production photos and ephemera.

This set offers quite a broad coverage of 20th century film. From Metropolis to Citizen Kane, The Seven Samurai to La Dolce Vita, Psycho and Clockwork Orange, The Godfather, Blue Velvet and  Pulp Fiction... and so many more cinematic masterpieces including many lesser-known gems.

If you are looking for a way to build a film collection which will educate, entertain and astound, then you couldn’t do better than to read this book and start collecting!

If someone you know is too enamoured with those clichéd bland releases which are so common today, then this would be a great Xmas gift to get them to expand their cinematic horizons !

100 All-Time Favorite Movies has been released in a 25th anniversary edition, it is hardcover, 2 volumes in a slipcase and is 800 pages and is, of course, profusely illustrated.
